A self-described moderate Democrat, Colin previously served in a notable nongovernment role as a linebacker for the Tennessee Titans in the NFL. In 2021 he was heavily focused on voting rights legislation.
Colin was a member of the Department of Housing and Urban Development in the Obama administration. He won his seat against a Republican opponent in 2018 after coming up short in 2016.
After leaving his first career as a linebacker for the Tennessee Titans, Colin worked in the Obama administration. Since being in Congress he’s fought for a lot as a moderate Democrat but perhaps nothing more so than voting rights recently!
Colin knows a thing or two about the importance of physical fitness—he was a football player, duh! So now he’s helped introduce the MOVE Act, a bipartisan bill looking to expand access to preventative health fitness services for Veterans. Fellow under-45er Anthony Gonzalez, also a former NFL-er, led the way on this no-brainer of a bill. The VA currently has many preventative health programs yet lack the adequate physical space to carry them out. So this bill allows Veterans to lease physical space through VA funding. This sounds like a pretty great deal!
Colin had his eyes on voting rights this year! As a voting and civil rights attorney, Colin strongly supports restoring the Voting Rights Act. He is deeply concerned by efforts to erect barriers to voting, and supports measures like expanded early voting and making Election Day a federal holiday to make the process more accessible for all citizens.
The Democratic system is fragile, but in all honesty what isn’t fragile right now? Colin, a former voting rights attorney, saw firsthand in his district how fragile our election process was and the foreign attempts to influence the U.S. election. Colin voted for the Protecting Our Democracy act to help strengthen checks and balances and foster transparency against foreign election interference. The act would require that political committees report to the FBI and the Federal Elections Commission regarding certain foreign contacts. While those are just a few of the things it helps prevent, do you think we need more election transparency and security?
Though Taiwan is technically an independent nation, China still considers it to be part of its territory. In case you’ve been living under a rock, the U.S. and China aren’t buddy-buddy these days, so Colin’s visit, along with a bipartisan delegation that included other PP leaders Sara Jacbos (D-CA) and Nancy Mace (R-SC), to Taiwan on their Thanksgiving Asia trip was significant. Colin reaffirmed America’s commitment to Taiwan’s self-determination and that “The U.S. must stand firm and gather the world in defense of a rules-based international order where human rights, the right to self-determination and freedom of expression and commerce are protected.”
