Emilia Sykes

Emilia comes from a long line of state politicians. Her mother and father both held the same seat in the OH state legislature and later, after her father retired, Emilia won the seat for herself at 28-years-old. That state House seat was in the hand of a Sykes family member for 40 years!

Who is she?

Congresswoman Emilia Sykes represents Ohio’s 13th District, which includes parts of Akron and surrounding areas. She comes from a family with a deep political legacy—her father, Vernon Sykes, served in the Ohio State Senate, and her mother, a former judge, has had a significant impact on the community as well. Emilia’s no stranger to public service herself. Before joining Congress, she served as the Minority Leader of the Ohio House of Representatives, where she worked on expanding healthcare access, improving education, and advocating for criminal justice reform. Emilia’s focus in Congress remains on improving the lives of working families, ensuring everyone has access to quality healthcare, and fighting for economic equity.

What’s she saying?

“I’m going to hold my head high in every room that I’m fortunate enough to walk into, because I am the embodiment of my ancestors’ hard work.”
